IPaT Hosts Mobile Storytelling Workshop, Hackathon

IPaT’s offices were buzzing with activity recently, as we hosted three storytelling events in support of our Midtown Buzz project with Midtown Alliance.  More than 40 people from Atlanta’s technology and creative communities attended the Midtown Mobile Storytelling Workshop, which highlighted four case studies to broaden our idea of “what’s a story” and “what’s mobile.” There were also brainstorming sessions on: history/cultural heritage, arts, health/fitness, games, civic engagement, community building and commercial.

Midtown Buzz is an experiment in mobile innovation, and our storytelling week activities included presentations by practitioners of traditional and emerging mobile media. We provided insights and tools for developers to use augmented reality technologies, iBeaconand Near Field Communication technologies, as well as wearable computing to tell their stories. The Midtown Buzz Storytelling Workshop was followed by a deep dive on Google Glass, at the Google Glass Design Sprint on Urban Storytelling.

February 7th kicked off the two-day Midtown Buzz Storytelling Hackathon, where some of the ideas generated at the workshop and design sprint were put into motion. More than 40 participants created great ideas for mobile applications designed to tell a story and engage with the community to the benefit of Midtown. Seven teams presented their concepts, and prizes were awarded in the following categories: Community, Commercial, Technological Innovation and People’s Choice. Here's a list of the winners in each category.

Each winning team received a gift bag of prizes including restaurant, theater and museum tickets. IPaT and Midtown Alliance will now meet with each of the winning teams, as well as other participants, to offer assistance in mentoring and facilitation. Student participants are also encouraged to participate in the upcoming Convergence Innovation Competition.
